Learning grammar makes sense

It is quite simple: without grammar no language, because there would be no structure on which you could orient yourself when speaking/writing or listening/reading. Language confusion and misunderstandings would be inevitable, because you lacked the «construction plans» for language production and language comprehension. Grammar is essential for successful communication, because it ensures the connection of texts, also called coherence. It can only fulfill this communicative function if the form and function of linguistic expressions are firmly related. Grammar therefore – like other language areas – has its own rules of use, i.e. it has a language standard. You only learn a foreign language successfully if you strive for your grammar, because frequent violations of the norm can lead to your counterpart not understanding you or rejecting you because you speak or write «wrongly».
Grammar is also (as well as vocabulary) a tool for formulating thoughts or Findings (the so-called cognitive function of grammar). It provides you with various means of expression to choose from, with which you can structure and differentiate facts about which you want to communicate, how you actually perceive them or how you want to present them to your interlocutors. Strictly speaking, «grammar» refers to several ways to grasp the structure of a language.
